Police and RAB-11 have arrested two accused in a joint operation in the case of strangulation of an old woman in Begumganj, Noakhali.

RAB-11, CPC-3 Company Commander (Acting) Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Mithun Kumar Kundu confirmed the matter in a press release at around 2:30 pm on Thursday (June 19). Earlier, two accused were arrested from Gopalpur Union of the upazila on Wednesday afternoon and night.

The arrested are Jobaidul Islam Roni (16), son of deceased Jafar of Khonar house of Mobullapur village of Gopalpur union of the upazila, and Firoz Ahmed Rakib (23), son of deceased Abul Khair of Abdul Karim Munshi house of Debkala village of the same union.

The press release said that the old woman lived alone in the house of Morjina Akhtar. Her three sons are expatriates. On the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, the victim’s son Kamal sent 40,000 taka to his mother from abroad through a friend. He went to his friend’s house with the money and knocked on the door but did not get any response. Later, he found the balcony door of the house open and entered the house. When he entered the house, he saw the cupboard open and the furniture lying in a mess. When he immediately called the neighbors, they entered the house and saw Marjina Akhter lying dead on the bed with her eyes, nose and mouth covered with a towel and a bed sheet wrapped around her neck. Later, the son of the deceased came to the country from Saudi Arabia and buried his mother. Later, he consulted with the relatives and filed a case.

RAB-11, CPC-3 Company Commander (Acting) Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Mithun Kumar Kundu further said that after the case was registered, the unidentified accused were absconding to avoid arrest. During the interrogation of the arrested accused, they confessed to their involvement in the incident. The accused have been handed over to Begumganj Police Station for legal action.
