2 fishermen dead, 2 missing after fishing boat overturned by diver’s tool

A boat capsized on its way to fishing in the Meghna River in Hatiyar, an isolated island of Noakhali. Locals recovered the bodies of two jailers in this incident. Besides, 20 fishermen were rescued alive but two fishermen are still missing.
The boat sank in Meghna river south of Burir Dona Ghat in Burirchar Union of Upazila in the early hours of Friday (December 6).
The deceased are Abul Hashem (50), son of late Abdul Ali of Ward No. 9, Kalir Char of Burirchar Union, and Md. Jewel (27), son of Md. Mostafa of the same area. They are about uncle and aunt.
Locals said that on Wednesday night, a boat of local Rabiul Majhi with 24 fishermen went to the south of Dona Ghat of Hathiya Buri to set Behundi net in Meghna river. The boat overturned after colliding with an underwater reef early Friday morning. At that time, 20 fishermen were able to swim to the shore, but 4 remained. Later, local fishermen recovered the bodies of Abul Hashem and Md. Jewel from inside the boat. Two other fishermen named Delwar and Iran are still missing. Mourning is going on in the village houses of fishermen killed in this incident.
Titu Kumar Nath, in-charge of Nalchira Naval Police Outpost, said that a team of Naval Police went to the spot after receiving the information. The bodies of the slain fishermen have been handed over to their families. Efforts are on to rescue the missing fishermen.
