Four earthquakes have been felt in the capital Dhaka and its surrounding areas in the space of two days. Of these, three were in Narsingdi and one in Dhaka. One on Friday (November 21) morning and three on Saturday (November 22) at different times of the day, causing increasing concern among the public.

The earthquake felt at 10:38 am on Friday (November 21) is being called the most devastating in decades. The magnitude of the earthquake in Madhavadi, Narsingdi, was 5.7 on the Richter scale. Less than 24 hours later, another 3.3 magnitude earthquake was felt in the same area.

The earthquake is caused by 3 plates and 6 faults, which one in which region? The latest data from the Earthquake Observation and Research Center of the Meteorological Department says that the number of earthquakes in the country is increasing significantly year by year. According to experts, the recent tremors indicate that the earthquake-prone areas of Bangladesh have accumulated more energy, which may cause major risks in the future.

According to the data, 28 earthquakes were recorded in Bangladesh and the surrounding areas in 2017. In 2023, it increased to 41, and in 2024, it increased further to 54. The latest 4 earthquakes in just 24 hours have caused special concern.

Humayun Akhtar, a former professor of the Department of Geology at Dhaka University and an earthquake expert, believes that the recent earthquakes prove that the country’s earthquake-prone areas have accumulated more energy. According to him, it is very important to prepare for earthquakes by adopting short, medium and long-term plans now.

He said that although the exact time or place of an earthquake cannot be accurately predicted in advance, some simple preparations can reduce the loss of life by making homes safe, keeping emergency equipment ready, and making emergency plans with family members. All these play a role in saving lives during disasters.
