Residents of Kabirhat upazila of Noakhali have formed a human chain in protest against the cutting of canals which caused unnecessary and public suffering.

This human chain program was held in Chiringa market of the upazila on Sunday (December 08) morning.

At the time, the speakers said that the Chiringa canal of the upazila has been renovated several times in the past through the C-3 project. But the embankment of Noakhali Canal section of Chiringa Canal has not been repaired. Due to which our houses, crops and fish farms get submerged under water when monsoon comes. Currently, the government’s BADC has again taken the initiative to renovate the canal without cutting the dam at the head of the Chiringa canal. It is feared that hundreds of families in this region will suffer. Therefore, instead of cutting this part of our area, the locals demanded to cut the dam at the head of Chiringa canal, a branch of Noakhali canal, and arrange water drainage.

When asked about this, Assistant Engineer of BADC Noakhali, Jewel Hossain said over the phone that if the canal is cut, the mouth of the canal must be re-excavated and water drainage will be arranged.
