Trawler at anchor sinks after being hit by a bulkhead in Hatiyar Meghna: 2 dead

The bodies of two fishermen have been recovered after a fishing trawler sank after being hit by an unknown bulkhead in Hatiyar Meghna River in Bichchinna Dwip Upazila of Noakhali.

 

The incident took place in the Meghna River adjacent to Char Aman Ullah village of Ward No. 4 of Sukhchar Union of the upazila in the early hours of Monday (July 28).

 

The deceased are Sakib Uddin (17), son of Monir Uddin of Shullukia village of Charking Union of the upazila, and Md. Arafat (18), son of Delwar Hossain of Ward No. 8 of Sukhchar Union.

 

According to local sources, Afshar Majhi’s fishing trawler was anchored on the banks of the Meghna River. Four people, including Afshar Majhi, were sleeping in the anchored trawler. At around 3 am, a blackhead coming from the south suddenly hit the trawler. The trawler overturned at the scene. Later, on hearing their screams, nearby fishermen came and rescued the two injured. The blackhead fled in the darkness of the night immediately after the incident. An hour later, the body of a fisherman named Shakib was recovered floating in the river. The body of another fisherman, Arafat, who went missing from the Meghna River near Ramcharan Bazar in Sukhchar, was recovered around noon on Monday.

 

Ashish Chandra Saha, in-charge of the Nalchira Naval Police Outpost, said that after receiving the information, the body of one person was recovered in the morning. Around 1 pm, we received information from the locals that the body of another person was recovered. The accident occurred when the trawler anchored late at night was hit. Further legal action will be taken based on the complaints of the victims.
