Police have arrested Sandhip Upazila Awami League President Alauddin Bedon from Hatia, an isolated island upazila in Noakhali. He was arrested from Jorkhali village in Ward No. 7 of Burirchar Union of the upazila at around 6 am on Thursday (July 31).

The arrested Alauddin Bedon is the son of the late Abul Kashem of Harishpur village in Ward No. 3 of Sandhip Municipality of Chittagong. He has been the president of Sandhip Upazila Awami League for a long time.

According to police and local sources, the police came to know that Alauddin Bedon had been hiding in his in-law’s house for a long time since the fall of the Awami government on August 5. Based on such information, the police conducted a raid in Jorkhali village in Burirchar Union of the upazila on Thursday morning. At that time, the police arrested Bedon with 10 pieces of cocktails from the house of Kalam Haji in Jorkhali village. Locals said that 15-20 more associates of Sandeep who were with him fled after sensing the presence of the police. Bedon is the daughter-in-law of Nurul Islam of Jorkhali village in Ward No. 7 of Burirchar Union.

When contacted, Hatia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Ajmal Huda confirmed the incident and said that AL leader Bedon was arrested with 10 pieces of cocktails. A case has been registered under the Explosives Act in this incident. He will be arrested in the case and handed over to the Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Friday morning.
