Two sisters drowned in pond water in Senbagh, Noakhali. The incident took place at around 6:30 am on Tuesday (August 19) in Dakshin Rajarampur village of Mohammadpur union of the upazila. The deceased children are Bibi Mariam Ahi (10), daughter of Belal Hossain of the same village, and Sidratul Muntaha Sohir (6).
It was learned from talking to local people and the police that the two sisters attended a local madrasa. At around 6:30 am, the two sisters went to the pond ghat next to their house to wash their faces. There, they saw a snail on the ghat. At one stage, the elder sister Ahi fell into the pond while trying to catch the snail on the ghat. Then, while trying to catch the elder sister, the younger sister Sohir also fell into the pond water and drowned. Such a scene can be seen when observing the CCTV footage of the house. Later, at around 7 am, an uncle of their house found the two sisters floating unconscious in the pond and rescued them. They were then taken to a local village doctor who declared them dead.
Senbagh Police Station Superintendent (SI) Abdur Rouf said that the elder sister fell into the water while trying to catch snails in the pond. While trying to catch her, the younger sister also fell into the water and drowned. Since there was no complaint, the body has been handed over to the family.
