A child named Sumi Akhtar (10) died due to lightning in Hatiya, an isolated island of Noakhali. The accident took place on Tuesday (November 5) around 12:30 in the afternoon in Purvanchal village of Ward No. 4 of Nijhum Dwip Union of the upazila. The deceased Sumi is the daughter of Md Yusuf of the same ward.

Alauddin, the local village police, said that from 11 o’clock, lightning started with rain in Nijhum Island. Then Sumi went out to take the dry wood from the side of the house to the kitchen. He took shelter under a tree as the lightning started. At that time the tree was struck by lightning. In this, Sumi died on the spot due to lightning striking the bark of the tree.

Administrative officer of Nijhum Dwip Union. Hasan said, the deceased’s father is a day laborer by profession. The tragic death of his daughter due to lightning has cast a shadow of mourning in the area. 

Nijhum Island police outpost in-charge Sub-Inspector (SI) Nurul Amin said the matter was not reported to the police.
